Stylistic Analysis of News English论文

【Abstract】This paper analyzes the stylistic characters of news from local perspectives based on an example from the USA Today.The specific data of analyzing in syntactical and lexical level will be explained in the paper.

1 Syntactic Structure

　　The sentence deflection in news English of long and complicated sentence is very obvious.The sentence in news English is much longer and complicated than other kinds of texts like poem，advertisement and novel etc.there are 346 words，15 sentences in the report I chose，and 23 words in a sentence in erage.The longest sentence has 49 words，the shortest 1

1 words.

　　The sentences in news English is not only longer in length but also more complicated in structure.There are 6 clauses in this piece of new and takes up 40% of the total sentences.The 9th sentence“It is clear to me that this is an organization that is focused on building thoughtful decision-making processes and establishing a forward-thinking culture of sustained success，”is in a very complicated structure，a clause is followed by another“that”clause.Besides clauses，infinitives and gerund are frequently used.2 infinitives and 12 gerunds are found in this piece of news；all of this together increases the reading difficulty.
　　2 Noun Phrases Structure
　　The noun phrases in news English is rather complicated.The percentage of one-component noun phrase is much less than two-component noun phrase，19.6% for one-component noun phrase while 47.6% for two-component noun phrase.The percentage of three-component noun phrase and four-component noun phrase are comparatively high，18.0% and 11.5% respectively.Noun phrases with two and three pre-modifications are common in the example，such as：“team and player performance”，“Pro Basketball Forecast”，“thoughtful decision-making processes”，“a forward-thinking culture”，”the team's administration systems”，“critical support services”etc.The most complicated pre modification of noun phrase is in the 15th sentence：“the team's player development representative”，four pre modifications are used to modify the noun“representative”.
　　

3 Lexical Structure

　　One of the lexical features of news English is that few pronouns are used.There are only 5 pronouns in“ESPN writer joins NBA team’s front office”，about 1% of the total words.On the contrary，names of people and places are used in a large scale，because the use of specific names every single time increases accuracy and clarity of the news.
