Abstract:Being an academic visitor,I he been lucky to he the opportunity to visit and learn at Loughborough University,UK,aiming to improve my comprehensive abilities of English.During my short stay here,I he been appealed to by many things-the beautiful and big scale of campus,the top ranking of the university in her academic research … especially the profound knowledge of the professors and stuff,who are responsible,devoted and ready to help whenever required by the students. My central focus is on the characteristics of English Teaching and Learning at this university,which I participated and observed during my stay.

  1 Introduction to The Department of English and Drama
  The Department of English and Drama is a dynamic and international body,with students not only from across the British Isles,but also Asia,North America and a dozen different countries on the European mainland. With around 500 undergraduate students,more fthean 70 postgraduate students(MA and Research),and over 30 staff,it is large enough to promote a wide range of activities and interests while still preserving a strong sense of community where formality is kept to a minimum.
  At undergraduate level English and Drama can be studied on their own,or together. English can also be studied in various combinations with North American Literature and Film,Sports Science,History,Pubishing,or Politics;There is also a Part-Time English BA. These programs are very highly rated;In the 2007 National Student Survey,Loughborough English came 2nd nationally,and in placing Loughborough Drama 5th in its 2007 survey,the Guardian scored it higher than any other mainstream universities.
  

2 Teaching models

  Courses are mainly conducted in two models:lecture plus seminar and seminar alone. For some courses,e.g. 19thCentury American Writing,An Introduction to Language and Moderni are taught under“lecture plus seminar”model.While others,e.g. Oral Communication and Introduction to Short Stories are conducted in “seminars”.

1 Lectures

  Lectures are usually performed in a large room with about 30 students who sit around tables instead of desks in rows.Or in a hall which can hold more than 200 students.
  In the first lecture of the new semester,the tutor will begin the lecture by introducing its aims,objectives,methods of assesents,teaching contents,schedules,requirements for learning and so on,which are printed on the handout prepared for each student before hand.
