Abstract:Grammar-Teaching plays a significant role in College-English Teaching. In order to enhance students’ English level enormously, college English teachers are supposed to attach much importance in Grammar-Teaching. This essay aims to come up with some solutions to those problems and status-quo appeared in today’s college English Grammar classes. It will focus on the effective teaching approaches.

1 Grammar-Teaching

  Recent years, English teachers somehow ignore the Grammar-Teaching in English teaching. In the process of English teaching in colleges and universities, it is found that most of non-English majors are doing bad in English grammar and English basic knowledge. Teachers feel quite worried when they come cross students repetitive misuse of verbs and the use of pidgin English sentences. As English teachers, we should organize our lessons of Grammar-Teaching properly.
  2 Grammar-Teaching in College for Non-English Majors
  It is impossible for teachers to go through all the grammar knowledge to the non-English majors in college, simply because of the time limit in class and if we do so, the students would feel quite bored in grammar classes. Teachers should integrate grammar knowledge together by relating, deducing, demonstrating and comparing different grammar knowledge. For example, in textbook appears a clause sentence, the teacher could connect different clause sentences like subject clause, object clause to each other. Teachers could instruct the students to make sentences with those grammar knowledge learned right away. By doing so, students could he a good command of the target grammar knowledge. What’s more, this method could assist students in relating the learned to the new knowledge and get an impressed memory of those knowledge.
  It is widely accepted that an English learner should possess the ability to realize whether a English sentence applies to the grammar rules and the ability to make a correct English sentence applied to the grammar rules. However, Chinese students he difficulty in distinguish the difference between English and mother tongue, partly because they he no English-speaking environment. Therefore, in college English classes, Grammar-Teaching plays a significant role. Teachers are responsible to attach importance on grammar-teaching and design proper lessons for students, improving their ability of using English correctly. In this way, teachers select the appropriate situation for students, which could push the students to learn how to solve the real problems by using English correctly. Once when I had my English class, I saw a students sleep in class. At that moment, I planed to explain the usage of ‘should’t he’. Then I took use of this situation to demonstrate this piece of knowledge. First of all, I told the students’should’t’ was used to persuade someone not to do something, so I would told the student sleeping in my class that ‘you should’t sleep in the class.’ Then a student told me he slept in class last day, then I told him’You should’t he slept in the class.’ After that, students made several sentences with the phrase’ shouldn't he’. In this class, students learned the usage of ‘shouldn't he done’ without any difficulty. Apart from the situational approach, teachers also can take use of PPT,video and pictures in the grammar classes. If the teacher select a topic which attracts the students, it is easy to indulge the target knowledge to students.
